Amazonas Brazil
The Amazon Rainforest is a must-see destination for any adventurer interested in traveling to remote destinations. We spent a week on the Acqua Amazon, a small wooden riverboat that offers its passengers environmentally-friendly adventures. Pictured above is the indigenous tribe known as the Aldeia Cipia. Located on the outskirts of Manaus, Brazil, they are native to the region and have immersed themselves in the rainforest, living off the land. Our guide told us a story that I will never forget...on our final day sailing down the river, we asked him if the people of the Amazon fear any of the creatures that inhabit the jungle. He told us a story of a local tribe, where the children used small canoes made of wood to travel - the crocodiles of the river twice the size of their small boats. When one of the children was asked if he feared being killed by the beasts, the boy responded - "I do not fear the crocodiles. Many years ago, my mother went into town to fetch some supplies and while crossing the road, she was struck by a bus and killed. Tell me, do you fear crossing the road?" The message of that story stuck with me, that just because we are afraid of something, it does not mean that fear is always founded. What may be terrifying to us, may be completely normal for someone else. Push boundaries...because we can't let fear keep us from living.
Antarctica
For all of you world travelers that want to be blown away by amazing scenery and endless beauty, Antarctica is the destination for you! When I first booked this trip, I was nervous after reading all about the dreaded "Drake Shake" and I'm here to tell you - the Drake Passage is no joke. While the seas were turbulent, with enough nausea medication, I managed to avoid tossing my cookies during the longest two days of my young adult life. While other passengers on board the Hurtigruten Expedition weren't as lucky, I think they would all agree that every bit of the journey was more than worth it to set foot on land. Antarctica is truly like something straight out of a National Geographic special. Words can't even describe the serene feeling of waking up early in the morning to Minke whales breaching right outside of your cabin door. There were many mornings and late nights that I spent out on the balcony, enjoying the calm waters of the Antarctic Circle and breathing in the cool crisp air. While summertime in Antarctica doesn't exactly scream beach attire, it's also not as cold as some might think. In fact, it was actually colder back at my home base in Nashville during my time on the continent. With enough hot chocolate and the warmth of the lecture hall, I managed to fill my time on board the ship with scientific research and sightseeing.
