Lisbon, Portugal
For those of you who like to travel on a dime, while saving every penny - Portugal is the place to be! With the overall cost of living far less than the United States, this destination is perfect for budget friendly travelers. Backpackers are incredibly common in Portugal and the country has some must-see sites that are widely spread around each municipality. I would recommend getting a cheap rental car and exploring areas like Sintra, Porto, Lisbon, Lagos and Carvoeira. Whatever part of the country you choose to explore, you'll find everything you need for an amazing vacation!
Costa Rica
Alert! One of my favorite budget travel destinations! Do not pass up the magnificent experience that is Costa Rica. My favorite place to stay for first timers is typically near the Arenal Volcano, although Monteverde is beautiful as well. Flying into SJO and renting a car from there is incredibly easy, although be forewarned the hold they place on your card is typically upwards of 2k...once you drive on the roads you'll understand why (I've never seen so many potholes). Even if you're not necessarily a skilled driver, I would say go for the rental car! It'll be far easier getting around and if you're nervous about the road conditions then feel free to rent a higher vehicle - although not required unless you plan to go off-roading.
Manaus, Brazil
Brazil is an amazing destination for travelers that are interested in fully immersing themselves in another culture. With the Amazon Rainforest, Rio Di Janeiro Carnival, and Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado Mountain, there is so much to do and see! While I was a bit reluctant to travel to Brazil initially, mostly due to news stories related to civil unrest, crime, etc. that couldn't be further from what I found. The people of Brazil are incredibly kind and were thrilled to see three young women wanting to experience the beauty of the Amazon Rainforest. The town of Manaus was filled with locals - some who spoke English flawlessly and others that only spoke Portuguese - however, every single person made us feel right at home in our journey. And for that reason alone, Brazil will forever hold a special place my heart.
